In Madagascar, zebu cattle are a common sight and hold cultural importance as symbols of power, strength, and prosperity. The average zebu weighs between 400 to 600 lbs and stands at a shoulder height of around 1 - 1.20 meters. These animals are slow to mature, but have very long lifespans, an average of 18 to 21 years. However, the population of zebu has significantly declined in recent years, going from 20 million in 2005 to only 9 million today. This decrease is due to various factors including a lack of investment, inadequate veterinary care, and theft.
